What will be covered during this course?

Aimed at ecologists, conservationists, botanists, biological recorders and environmental professionals looking to broaden their ecological understanding of British mosses and learn how to identify them.

  • Gain insight into the biology and ecological importance of mosses in the UK, including how to reliably distinguish mosses from liverworts using key structural features.

  • Develop confidence in identifying common British moss genera and species by understanding diagnostic morphological traits and applying practical tools and techniques for field identification.

  • Build competence in recording bryophytes by learning best practice for submitting moss records and accessing further resources to support accurate identification and continued learning.

Excellent. I did try and get into moss and liverwort ID about 15 years ago, but it got lost in other life events, and I though I had forgotten everything. This course re-kindled my enthusiasm, and also showed I had not forgotten all I had learnt although it was deeply buried. This is just what I hoped the course would do. I was also pleased that there were details of "How to record" because my earlier contacts with bryophyte experts had also been lost - and what's the point of identifying something if you don't record it properly? Absolutely delighted. I might try the Sphagnum course now.

Ryan, as always, is very clear and thorough on his courses and it was a very good overview and starting point for identifying bryophytes. Perhaps he could be persuaded to do one on sphagnums?!

Ecology tutor

Ryan Clark

Bryophyte Specialist

Ryan Clark is a UK-based naturalist and experienced biological recorder with an interest in entomology and botany. He has delivered public field courses on mosses and liverworts, teaching identification techniques, life cycles, and their ecological significance. Passionate about often-overlooked species, Ryan frequently records bryophytes across a range of habitats (including woodlands, bogs, and coastal dunes) using field photography and hand lenses to aid recognition. His work highlights the value of bryophytes as indicators of habitat quality and their vital role in carbon and water regulation.
