What will be covered during this course?

Aimed at amateur naturalists, biological recorders, wildlife gardeners, conservationists, ecologists and environmental professionals looking to improve their knowledge of UK invertebrates.

  • Gain an understanding of terrestrial harvestmen and their importance within ground-level ecosystems, including their identifying characteristics, behaviours, defensive adaptations, and the habitats they occupy such as leaf litter, soil surfaces, and spaces beneath logs and stones.

  • Develop the ability to recognise arboreal harvestmen species and understand the adaptations that support life in vegetation, including anatomical features, sensory abilities, camouflage strategies, and movement within bark, leaves, and canopy environments.

  • Build confidence in understanding subterranean and generalist harvestmen by exploring their ecological roles, habitat associations, identification challenges, and the value of microhabitats, field recording, and monitoring in tracking distribution and range changes.

Harvestmen Specialist

Meg Skinner grew up in the rural Cotswolds and has always had an interest in natural history. She studied Biodiversity Conservation at Nottingham Trent University, where she began recording invertebrates as a hobby. Meg has contributed to several wildlife conservation projects and currently works as an ecologist. She has a special interest in harvestmen and has been organising the Harvestmen Recording Scheme since 2019 and was elected to the British Arachnological Society Council in 2021.
