What will be covered during this course?

Aimed at ecologists, conservationists, botanists, biological recorders and environmental professionals looking to broaden their ecological understanding of British ferns and learn how to identify them.

  • Develop an understanding of the key morphological features, taxonomy, and identification resources of native British ferns and fern allies, enabling confident recognition of the major groups during fieldwork

  • Gain insight into the distinctive morphology, habitats, and identification features of British Asplenium species, supporting confident field recognition of both widespread and range-restricted spleenworts.

  • Understand the key morphological features and identification resources needed to accurately recognise widespread and selected localised Dryopteris species of the British Isles during fieldwork.

Henry Miller

Botany Specialist

Henry Miller is a botanist working on Species Conservation Assessments at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, on projects in Ethiopia and tropical America. At Kew, he is also researching the taxonomy of Asian buckthorns (Rhamnaceae) using DNA sequencing. Outside of work, Henry is the co-recorder for Middlesex with the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland, and for the botany section of the London Natural History Society. He enjoys learning about and identifying a wide range of species.
